Joey Brehmer’s game is built for this time of year.

After a five-game stint with the Sudbury Wolves earlier this season, the Waterloo native who styles himself as a power forward is back in the Golden Hawks lineup for the playoffs.

Brehmer says the faster, more physical brand of hockey helped elevate his game.

“It’s good being back here,” he said. “I know I can dominate at this level and be here with all my friends. My teammates help me out a lot, and they’re all great guys.”

In 50 games with Trenton this season, Brehmer tallied 25 goals and 25 assists, along with 42 penalty minutes.

His offensive production has taken a significant step forward something he attributes to experience and a more direct approach around the net.

His point totals have more than doubled from last season, when he had 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points, along with 59 penalty minutes.

“Probably just getting used to the league and the systems we play,” he said. “I’ve focused more on getting to the net instead of playing around up high. Going to those dirty areas has really helped.”

In the playoffs, Brehmer’s physical, aggressive style is exactly the type of game that generates success.

“Playoffs are the best time of the year,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun. You get to be with the guys every day, and the games mean so much more. I’m really excited to get back into it.”

The Golden Hawks have already swept the Lindsay Muskies in the first round.

“We have a lot of skill, but we can’t rely on that,” he said. “When we move our feet and play physically, we’re a really tough team to match.”

While Brehmer has his future lined up with a commitment to Lake Superior State University, his focus remains on another Buckland Cup championship with the Golden Hawks.

“Playing in the OHL was always a goal growing up, so it’s cool to say I’ve done that,” he said. “Going to college will be another great opportunity.”

With a roster built for playoff hockey, Brehmer believes the Golden Hawks have what it takes for another deep run.

“I think we do,” he said.
