Bennett looks to build on rookie season with Golden Hawks

Logan Bennett spent much of last summer competing for a roster spot with the Trenton Golden Hawks.

A year later, after a successful rookie season, the 18-year-old forward was able to enter the offseason with a much different outlook.

"Tons of confidence," Bennett said. "It's good because you're a lot more comfortable. You understand the league and you're a lot more impactful. You're ready to go back at it."

For Bennett, his priority this summer is getting stronger.

"Mainly for me, I've got to be in the gym," he said. "That's the biggest thing is putting on weight. I'm not skating too much yet, but it's good to get out on the ice and be around the guys."

After the season, Bennett returned home and graduated from high school after spending much of the year in Trenton. He credited the Golden Hawks organization for helping him balance hockey and academics throughout the season.

"It was a cool transition," Bennett said. "I missed a lot of my friends back at home, so it was good to see all of them and talk about the season with them. Trenton was great with helping us with homework and making school and hockey pretty easy to transfer."

Bennett was one of several returning players during the Golden Hawks' development camp last month, helping test the organization's netminders while also learning from goaltending coach Mike Murphy.

"It's really fun," Bennett said. "It's good to pick his brain because he knows the goalie perspective. So it helps the goalies, but it's helping me just as much."

Bennett had five goals and 15 points in 46 games last season. The Oshawa native also took part in the Zach Hyman Prospects Series.

Having attended development camps before Bennett knew what expected.

"Honestly, it's just working hard and showcasing yourself," he said. "You've got to show your best every night, and they let you know when you do."

Bennett, who produced at nearly a point-per-game pace throughout minor hockey, was drafted by the Sarnia Sting in the 13th round of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection.

This year's camp was held at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre in Belleville, giving players an opportunity to skate in a different environment while reconnecting with familiar faces.

"It's a beautiful rink," Bennett said. "A lot of my friends come, so it's good to meet up with some old guys."

With a new coaching staff now leading the Golden Hawks, Bennett said the early conversations have only helped his excitement for his sophomore season.

"It's been unreal," Bennett said. "They've been so open so far, and I'm really excited to get going."
