While Joey Brehmer's future leads to Lake Superior State University. His present is very much rooted in the Bay of Quinte region.
Like many of his teammates on the Trenton Golden Hawks, Brehmer has his sights set on continuing his hockey career south of the border.
Brehmer is committed to playing NCAA Division I hockey at Lake Superior State University, where he will be joined by his teammate and current billet mate, Candon O’Neill.
"We live together, so I couldn’t ask for a better situation," he said. "We push each other, and it’s great to be working toward the same goal."
Brehmer also credits Golden Hawks head coach and general manager Derek Smith for his role in his decision to choose Lake Superior State.
Smith, an alumnus of the university and helped provide guidance throughout the decision-making process.
"He told me it was a great school," he said. "I went down and visited, and everybody I met there was amazing. It’s a great arena and the best spot I could imagine. It worked out so well there’s not much more I could ask for."
The 18-year-old power forward has always wanted to play NCAA hockey and is focused on his education.
"It’s something I dreamed of as a kid," he said. "For that to come true is pretty awesome. My dad is an engineer, and I’ve been trying out those courses, so I feel like it could be a great opportunity to get into a good field."
Brehmer attributes his success and work ethic to his father, Karl. That same drive is evident in his approach to the game, where he is known for his offensive instincts and relentless effort.
A native of Waterloo, Ontario, Brehmer has registered 18 points, including nine goals, in 30 games with Trenton, building on a strong campaign last year with the Stratford Warriors of the GOJHL.
Although moving away from home was initially challenging, his time in Trenton has giving him the opportunity to compete at a high level while showcasing his skills to NCAA programs that value his size along with his overall game.
Brehmer has embraced his time in Trenton and appreciates the support from his teammates, coaches and the community.
"Moving away was kind of tough at the beginning, but everybody I met here has helped me out, and it’s been great so far," he said. "I couldn’t ask for much more. It’s a great atmosphere. All the fans are awesome."
In the coming years, Lake Superior State could very well see Brehmer and O’Neill in major roles with the Lakers.
For now, their focus remains on the stretch drive and OJHL playoffs. With a record of 26-5-2-1, including a 15-game winning streak, Trenton currently tops the CJHL Top 20 national rankings.
"I’m just looking forward to the rest of the season and trying to bring home a national championship," Brehmer said.
