Golden Hawks open preseason with 6-1 win over Muskies

The Trenton Golden Hawks began their preseason Friday night the same way they have for much of the past few seasons, with a win.

Trenton scored five times in the first period before adding another in the middle frame to earn a 6-1 victory over the Lindsay Muskies.

Rookie forward Owen Rivers led the way offensively, with two goals and an assist. The Shannonville native was one of five Golden Hawks to record a multi-point performance, while ten different players found the scoresheet.

Returning forward Mason Musclow opened the scoring 4:09 into the game before Rivers doubled the lead on the power play.

Lindsay answered shortly after, with Chase MacKay cutting the deficit. Trenton responded with a trio of tallies before the end of the period, as Cameron Shaw, Ethan Jackman and Rivers each found the back of the net.

In the second, Jackson Bathgate rounded out the scoring to give Trenton a 6-1 lead before a scoreless final twenty minutes of play saw the Golden Hawks outshoot the Muskies 10-8.

Christian Sedgewick and Kale Mace both returned to the Trenton lineup after spending part of the week at Ontario Hockey League training camps with the Brantford Bulldogs and Barrie Colts, respectively.

Nolan Nicoll played the entire game for Trenton, making 22 saves. The goaltender joined the Golden Hawks this summer after spending last season with the Caledon Bombers and is expected to share the crease with OJHL all-star Hayden Jeffery this season.

Trenton went 1-for-6 on the power play and was perfect on the penalty kill.

Along with five returning players, the Golden Hawks dressed several recently signed and affiliate players making their preseason debuts with the club. Friday also marked the first game behind the bench for new head coach Connor Armour.

The Golden Hawks and Muskies will meet again Sunday at Duncan McDonald Memorial Community Gardens to close out the preseason series. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for the Trenton Care & Share Food Bank, with donations helping support local families in need.
