Darlison flying under the radar in Trenton

Jamie Darlison may not always be the first name mentioned when discussing the Trenton Golden Hawks.
The Whitby native has quietly put together one of the most consistent stretches of any forward in the OJHL. He sits third in team scoring with 23 goals and 47 points in 38 games on a Trenton roster built to contend for another Buckland Cup title.
Now in his third season with the Golden Hawks, Darlison has developed into a reliable two-way centre who plays on the penalty kill and is trusted in the defensive zone. He says his familiarity with head coach Derek Smith has also helped his overall game.
“Scoring goals is great, but with that comes responsibility,” Darlison said. “Derek challenged me to take a step forward defensively this year, and I think I have. I knew the systems, the coaches, and most of the players. It’s nice not having to restart and learn everything again. You’re already in the flow right away, and that makes a big difference.”
After battling injuries last year, Darlison has dressed in every game this season.
“It feels great not being hurt. I took a big step this summer getting my body as strong as it could be, and I’ve stayed on top of stretching and workouts during the season,” he said. “My play’s definitely been better than previous years, and I think that comes with preparation and a bit of maturity too. I feel like I’m where I want to be.”
Darlison’s play has also drawn interest from several college programs.
“It’s been busy. A lot of schools have reached out, and it’s tough to narrow things down. I want to talk to a few more coaches, visit some campuses, and make the right decision,” Darlison said. “It’s awesome. I’ve worked my whole life for this, so why stop now.”
Looking back on his junior career, Darlison, now in his overage season, says he is most proud of what he has accomplished in Trenton.
“I’m really proud. I never would’ve thought I’d win a championship in junior hockey,” he said. “Not many guys get to say that. I’m proud of what I’ve done here and proud to wear a Trenton jersey. Hopefully we can get another one.”
As the Golden Hawks prepare for another championship run, Darlison’s contributions may continue to fly under the radar. But on a championship-calibre team, his two-way play has become an important part of Trenton’s success.
“Just keep doing your thing. Maybe train a little harder, lift some more weights,” Darlison said. “There’ll be ups and downs and injuries, but hockey’s fun at the end of the day, and I wouldn’t change it for anything.”
