Taeo Artichuk has quickly caught the attention of Trenton Golden Hawks fans with his speed, skill, and competitiveness.
Since joining the organization last season, he has embraced his new community and playing his home games at the Duncan McDonald Memorial Community Gardens.
"It’s been an unreal experience with this team and coaching staff," Artichuk said. "Everyone treats you so well here. You feel comfortable in the locker room. It’s been amazing so far."
Artichuk arrived in Quinte West last October after beginning the season with the Erie Otters. He skated in 129 major junior contests, with the franchise after being taken 21st overall in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection.
Despite transitioning between leagues, Artichuk adapted to his new environment, tallying 17 goals and 26 assists for a total of 43 points in 34 games. His play was crucial in helping Trenton secure an Eastern Conference title.
"It's definitely a different game here," he said. "It's a lot faster. When you go from there to here, it makes your life a bit easier in that sense. The professionalism up there gives you an upper hand coming back down here. You're more prepared and better able to handle it."
Now, as the Golden Hawks seek even more success, Artichuk is confident in their ability to replicate recent achievements.
Trenton currently leads the OJHL with an .889 winning percentage and a +33 goal differential through their first nine games, while Artichuk has tallied 13 points, including four goals.
Over the past eight seasons, the Golden Hawks have reached the league finals four times, capturing the Buckland Cup in 2016, along with back-to-back Dudley Hewitt Cup titles in 2016 and 2017.
"I think we have a great chance to accomplish the same things we’ve achieved in the last few years. But we’re just getting started."," he said. "We’re still adjusting to our systems and everything like that. By January, we’ll be a much better team, and we’re going for it again this year."
Playing on a championship contender alongside other highly skilled players has only elevated Artichuk’s game.
"It’s been unreal playing with such smart hockey players on this team," he said. "They know how to read the game so well, and it makes my job a lot easier."
As one of the more experienced players on the roster, Artichuk is aware of the responsibility that comes with being a veteran.
"That's definitely been on my mind a lot this year, being one of the older guys and wanting to lead and help out as much as possible on the ice."
In addition to joining a talented roster, Artichuk, a native of Ajax, has been welcomed by a passionate fan base that provides unwavering support.
"Honestly, I didn’t know much about it at first," he said. "It’s a small town, but it’s really cool. The fan base is incredible, and it’s great to see the stands packed at every game."
One of the unique aspects of playing in Trenton is the connection between the Golden Hawks and the local military community.
The franchise proudly represents Trenton and the Bay of Quinte region, which is home to Canada’s largest Air Force base.
The Golden Hawks' uniforms feature a sleek gold and black design, with the Royal Canadian Air Force's F-86 Sabre fighter jet prominently displayed on the crest.
"I know we have soldiers who come to watch our games," he said. "It means a lot that we can put their logo on our chests. Playing for them is something I take pride in."
As Artichuk settles into his role with the Golden Hawks, fans can look forward to both his continued development and future success.
